Dr. Katherine Edel

Owner

Dr. Edel grew up in West Des Moines, Iowa. She knew from a very young age that she would be a veterinarian after spending time in the clinic with her father, Dr. Robert Culver, watching his compassion and commitment towards his patients and clients. He truly inspired Dr. Edel to dedicate her life to veterinary medicine with the goal of enriching the life of her patients and their owners.

Dr. Edel attended Iowa State University and received her degree in Veterinary Medicine in May of 2015 and joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team shortly after graduation. Following Dr. Culver’s retirement, Dr. Edel became owner of Heartland Animal Hospital in January 2024. Dr. Edel is a member of the AVMA and IVMA and actively pursues continuing education opportunities to further expand her knowledge within the veterinary medicine field.

When Dr. Edel is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family, being a spectator for her children’s sporting events, going to ISU football games, hiking in Colorado, baking and snuggling with her pets on the couch. Dr. Edel, her husband Logan, and their two children share their home with their cats Snickers, Zoey and Rizzo, along with their Bernese Mountain Dog, Tucker. All of their pets are spoiled and love snuggling on the couch or taking over the bed.

Dr. Edel has a special interest in internal medicine and ultrasonography. She loves bonding with her clients and patients by treating them with the same love and compassion that she would expect in return. She is committed to being with her patients and their clients through every stage of their life. Dr. Sarah Prescott

Dr. Prescott is from the Colo, Iowa area and grew up on a grain and livestock farm. This upbringing prompted Dr. Prescott to study veterinary medicine, although professionally she chose to pursue small animal medicine versus large animal.

After receiving her degree in Veterinary Medicine in May of 2002 from Iowa State University, Dr. Prescott joined Heartland Animal Hospital shortly after graduation. Dr. Prescott is a member of the AVMA, IVMA, GVDMA, and the Des Moines Golden Retriever Club.

Dr. Prescott lives near Maxwell with her husband, two daughters, three golden retrievers (Piper, Tris, and Amber), and four cats (Karen, Kevin, Carole, and Patrick). They also have a small herd of Boer goats and a flock of chickens. Dr. Prescott competes with her golden retrievers in agility and other dog sports and is an active contributor to her daughters’ 4-H projects. The family also enjoys traveling when time permits.

Dr. Prescott enjoys surgery, dentistry, and the challenge of spicy kitties. She appreciates that she has had the privilege of attending to multiple generations of pets from numerous families and hopes this continues for many more years.

Dr. Katherine Siegel

Dr. Siegel was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. From a young age, Dr. Siegel always knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian. Dr. Siegel attended Colorado State University where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. After graduating, she continued to work as a veterinary technician for two and half years before pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian.

Dr. Siegel received her degree in Veterinary Medicine in May of 2020 from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team shortly after graduation. Dr. Siegel is a member of the AVMA, IVMA, and AEMV (Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians). She is also Fear-Free Certified, which is a certification that is specific to preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets in a veterinary clinic setting.

When Dr. Siegel is not at work, she enjoys long walks with her dog, cuddling with her cats, attending concerts, traveling, and watching football. Dr. Siegel resides in Ankeny with her husband Kris and they share their home with their two cats, Tommy and Teddy, and their English Labrador Retriever, Ranger.

Dr. Siegel has a special interest in exotic medicine (especially guinea pigs!) and feline medicine. She also has a passion for preventative medicine. Although the newest addition to the practice, Dr. Siegel has enjoyed forming new bonds and relationships with our clients and their four-legged babies.

Mashell (Seb), RVT

Practice Manager

Mashell joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in April of 2017.

Mashell earned her Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology and passed her Veterinary Technician National Exam, becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2015.

Some of Mashell’s special interests within veterinary medicine include building client-patient relationships, professional dentistry, and reptiles. When not at work, Mashell enjoys board games, attending concerts, outdoor activities with her german shorthaired pointer and turtle.

Angela, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Angela joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in November of 2012. She earned her AAS degree in Veterinary Technology and became a Registered Veterinary Technician after passing her board examinations in 2012.

Angela enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine but particularly loves venipuncture, dentistry, and feline medicine. She enjoys bonding with our patients from kitten & puppyhood through their elderly years.
When not at work Angela enjoys spending time with friends, hiking with her daughter, listening to music and snuggling with her two cats Biggs and Daisy.

Jennifer, RVT

Registered Veterinarian Technician

Jennifer joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in September of 2018. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Iowa State University and an AAS degree in VeterinaryTechnology from Des Moines Area Community College. She became a Registered Veterinary Technician later in 2018 after passing her board examinations. Jennifer enjoys many aspects of veterinary medicine but finds connecting with the clients and their four-legged family members especially rewarding.

When not at work, Jennifer likes to read, go for long walks, and cuddle with her cats whenever possible. Jennifer lives in Des Moines with her two cats, Clementine and Otis.

Kaitlyn, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Kaitlyn joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in March 2022. Kaitlyn earned her AAS degree in veterinary technology and passed her board examination in 2017.

She especially enjoys the anesthesia aspect of veterinary medicine as she has had experience as an anesthesia technician at Iowa State University. Kaitlyn lives in Grimes with her husband, Ryan, and their two cavalier king charles spaniels Elliot and Emmie.

Katie, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Katie joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in November 2023. Katie graduated with her AAS in Veterinary Technology in May 2005 from Kirkwood Community College. She passed her state and national board exams in June 2005 to become a Registered Veterinary Technician.

Her passion in veterinary medicine lies in patient care, anesthesia, clinical pathology and emergency medicine. She loves getting to know our patients and their owners. In her free time, Katie loves to read, is learning how to crochet, and spending time with her 3 children. Katie also loves to spend time with her dogs, Ruger, a lab mix, and Mimi, a french bulldog.

Nichole, RVT

Registered Veterinary Technician

Nichole joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in August of 2024.

Nichole earned her Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology in 2021 and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in June that same year after passing her boards. Some of Nichole’s special interests in veterinary medicine are anesthesia, exotic medicine, radiology, and nutrition.

When not working Nichole enjoys reading, cuddling with her 3 cats Nermal, Lavender, and Elara. As well as competing with her mini poodle Reya in dock diving during the spring and summer.

Melissa

Veterinary Assistant

Melissa joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in December 2015. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois. She has been a veterinary assistant since 2000. She enjoys spending time with her cats, reading, and kayaking with her husband.

Kim

Veterinary Assistant

Kim joined Heartland Animal Hospital in November 2023. She graduated with her BS in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 2021. She is currently going through Penn Foster College’s online Veterinary Technology program in order to obtain her degree in Veterinary Technology to become a Registered Veterinary Technician.

Kim loves patient care and is passionate about not only getting to know your pets, but making a connection with owners as well. In her free time, Kim enjoys reading, riding her horse, Lexi, training her dogs in obedience and doing dog sports with her rescue beagle mix, Feyre and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Rhys.

Anne

Veterinary Assistant

Anne joined the team at Heartland Animal Hospital in September of 2021. She graduated in 1996 with a business degree from Iowa State University. GO STATE!! After years of being a stay at home mom, she decided to enroll in the Veterinary Assistance program through Penn Foster, graduating in 2021.

Anne really enjoys making connections with our clients, staff and all of our four legged friends at Heartland Animal Hospital. When not at work, she spends time with her husband, Jamen and three children. She loves to travel, and can often be found reading a good book. She enjoys golf, horseback riding, long walks on the beach and beautiful sunsets. She also shares her home with her three dogs, Kai (Akita), Marsh Capone (mixed breed) and Eleanor (Cane Corso), two cats Mikey and Reggie and her Russian tortoise MJ.

Nala

Veterinary Assistant/Client Care Specialist

Nala joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in August 2021. She recently graduated from Drake University with her bachelor’s degree in biology with the goal of continuing her education at ISU and becoming a veterinarian. She enjoys many aspects of veterinary medicine, especially exotic medicine, client education, and radiology! Nala values building relationships with all our clients and strives to make everyone feel at home.

In her free time, Nala enjoys spending time with her daughter, family and working on her pet photography. Nala resides in Ankeny and shares her home with her two dogs Bumi (Rat terrier mix) and Ozai (Mastiff mix) alongside her two cats Simba and Sheba.

April joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in April 2009.

A lifelong animal lover, April was drawn to veterinary medicine to make a difference in the lives of pets and their human companions. With a
penchant for client-focused service and a passion for education, April ensures all Heartland’s guests – whether two- or four-legged – feel comfortable from the minute they walk through the doors.

She has a bachelor’s degree from Central College (Pella, IA). She lives in Des Moines with her husband, four cats (Zombo, Ro, Ducky &
Skipper) and dog (Ladybird). In her free time, she loves to restore their historic home, garden, travel and spend time with family and
friends.

Brittney

Client Care Specialist

Brittney joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in Oct. 2021. She started her veterinary career in 2020 and has not looked back. She has a lot of experience with client care and enjoys being the first face you see when stepping into the hospital. She has a knack for grammar and is especially good at multitasking, often found juggling a phone on her shoulder while scribbling notes.

Brittney spends a lot of her free time doing makeup, practicing her culinary skills, traveling, and collecting tattoos. She is very much a cat person and has a portrait of her cat, Peaches, tattooed on her leg.

Kelsie

Client Care Specialist

Kelsie joined the Heartland Animal Hospital team in March of 2022. Prior to working in the veterinary field she worked in animal care facilities for 8 years. She loves meeting and welcoming all the patients and their owners in the lobby. At home she has a rat terrier named Mowgli and a mini australian shepherd named Luffy along with her two cats Baloo and Sheila. In her free time Kelsie enjoys reading, going to concerts, traveling and being with her friends and family.
